Single Subject Credential Admissions

Application Deadline

Spring Semester applications due November 15  (3 semester option)

Fall Semester applications due February 15  (2 semester option)

 

Program Prerequisites

  • Bachelor’s Degree must be posted before starting the program 

  • GPA: 2.67 overall or 2.75 in last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units 

  • Fulfill Subject Matter Competency Requirement 

  • Fulfill Basic Skills Requirement 

  • Fulfill Second Language Requirement 

  • Early Field Experience in a public classroom setting (Resources for finding appropriate early field experience setting)

  1.    Apply to the University through CSU Mentor online application process.  
  • Choose the Major/Program Objective -- Education (Single Subject/Second ED) [Cred/MA]
  • Choose the Degree Objective -- MA
  • Choose the Credential Objective -- Single Subject (subject area)
  1.    Send the following to Credential Services Office ATTN: Credential Admissions – SSP / Graduate College of Education - Burk Hall 244 / San Francisco State University /  1600 Holloway Ave. / San Francisco, CA 94132-415

                 *    Completed Department of Secondary Education's Admissions Application for the Single Subject Credential Program, including the Statement of Purpose.

                 *    Letter of Application (also serves as writing sample)

                 *    Three (3) letters of recommendation

                 *     Certificate of Clearance (fingerprinting) process

                 *     Evidence of Negative TB test. 

3.     Submit two sets of all transcripts:  1 set to the SF State Graduate Studies Division (ADM 250, 1600 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94132); and, 1 set to Credential Services Office ATTN: Credential Admissions – SSP / Graduate College of Education - Burk Hall 244 / San

4.     Make sure you have completed the following prerequisite requirements:

                 *    Satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement (Required for admission). Successful passage of one of the following:

                                  -- California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)

                                  -- A California Teacher Credentialing Commission-approved out-of-state basic skills exam

                                  -- CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) Placement Test

                                  -- CSU Entry Level Math & English Placement Test (ELM & EPT)

                 *    Subject Matter Preparation-- Either have majored in the subject area in which you plan to teach OR at least registered for the CSET in the subject matter, if not already passed the CSET

                 *    Completed the Second Language Requirement (see Application Packet for approved options)

                 *    Completed the Early Field Experience Requirement in a public classroom setting (45 hours) (Resources for finding appropriate early field experience setting)

 M.A. in Secondary Education & M.A. in Math Education - Admissions

Program Requirements

  • A 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate degree or last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, including credential courses.

  • A valid preliminary or clear single subject teaching credentia (Math concentration only)

  • Evidence of employment as a full or part time teacher or evidence of permission to work on a regular basis within a school setting through a volunteer program or other agreement

  • Evidence of written English proficiency

  • An interview with the graduate coordinator and/or other graduate advisors
